Great Martyr Barbara

Description: When creating the single-figure composition "Great Martyr Barbara", the author turned to the icons of Uglich and Pskov of the 14th century. Barbara dressed in traditional Greek attire was installed on a round base of jasper. Based on the gilded inscription: "Holy Great Martyr Barbara." The combination of the sculptural form and the magnificent gilded ornament, made in the technique of Zlatoust engraving on metal, gives a special decorative effect to the sculpture. Barbara was the daughter of a wealthy Phoenician. She adopted Christianity, but her father, who hated Christians, tortured her, forcing him to renounce her faith. In the life it is said that in 306 AD the girl had a head cut off her own father. Great Martyr Barbara is considered to be the intercessor on the earthly path and pray to her for deliverance from sudden death. Miners honor her as their patroness.
